This afternoon I made a stop out at J&R Phillips Ranch to support and learn about Kashton’s Dream Home Fundraiser. All of the funds raised are going to go towards the establishment of a Respite Home in Fort St. John. The ranch style home currently exists near the Fort St. John hospital but is not set up to take any patients yet. So what the home is, is a place for families of people with medical needs who need 24/7 care to take them for “respite”, which means that the disabled person gets fully taken care of in a safe place while their family members can be relieved of worry and stress for a few hours or days knowing that their child or significant other is being well taken care of. The “dream” aspect comes in with the plans of Shawna (Kashton’s mom) to include things like fish tanks and an in-floor trampoline to make the house more enjoyable especially for kids with disabilities. Currently the closest similar facility is in Vancouver at Canucks Place. Kashton, who currently lives in the Dream Home part time, has spent some time in Canucks Place inspiring the idea of the Respite Home in Fort St. John.
The Fundraiser today takes place at the Phillips’ Ranch on the Old Fort Road. The event consists of a horseshoe tournament, 50/50, silent auction, arts vendors and a lineup of live music! Tom Cole, Gary Oker, Tom Garcia, the Willie Siemens Band, the Montney Coulees and Shawna Marie are all booked to take to the stage this evening. Len Cornet and his ‘Mighty Pig Roaster’ are also at the Ranch to serve up a BBQ dinner. Everyone involved has generously donated their time to help the dream of the Respite Home become a reality. The event runs until 9 pm tonight.
