The GIF. Used in reactions/memes/text messages, it’s kind-of become one of the default ways we communicate with each other these days (why share a video that has sound that will be a dead giveaway if you’re looking at dumb stuff on your cell phone at work).
That being said, the pronunciation of ‘GIF’ (which stands for Graphics Interchange Format) has been a highly-contentious issue on the internet for years. Is it pronouced “gif” or “jif?” Turns out the guy that wrote the code for the file format and invented the moving pictures, has finally set the record straight.
In an interview with the New York Times, GIF inventor Steve Wilhite says that the correct pronunciation is, in fact, “jif.” I’m kinda feeling pretty vindicated after feeling ostracised all these years to be honest.
